Dear all,
At each General Assembly, the International Astronomical Union has to determine the continuation or discontinuation of Commissions and Working Groups. Consequently, I intend to prepare a short letter emphasizing the role of the IAU-Working Group on Ap and related stars in bringing together a community with a diversity of expertise and scientific interests, and describing our plans for the next three years.
Although our working group exits beyond the IAU, discussing about the role it may play in the CP community is always a good exercise. Thus, I would like to take this opportunity to suggest that we share some ideas in this respect. Here are some questions to trigger the discussion:
1) What should be our plans for the next triennium (generally speaking, and in terms of specific activities)?
2) Should the WG play other roles besides promoting the reunion and information exchange between its members? If yes, which roles?
3) Is this forum of any use for those working on CP stars? How could it be improved?
Thanks in advance for your participation!
Margarida

Hello all,
I am a graduate student at the University of Delaware writing my PhD on observations of magnetic massive stars, more specifically Sigma Ori E (HD 37479, B2Vp He-strong star). Photometry was taken in the 1970's, and from literature it appears not again until 2004. Thus, I am wondering if there are data out there of this star that were taken, but not reported in that time period from 1980-2000. We are trying to measure whether the period of this star has changed since the initial measurements in the 70's, however it is difficult to discern without any data in those two decades. If you have any data (photometric or otherwise) that was unpublished of HD 37479, please contact me at meo at udel dot edu.
Thank you,
Mary Oksala

Dear Colleagues,
This is a First Announcement of the Joint Discussion:
**Progress in understanding the physics of Ap and related stars**
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 3-5 August 2009
Key words
---------
Stellar: pulsations, convection, rotation, diffusion and magnetism.
Motivation
----------
Chemically Peculiar (CP) stars are stage to a diversity of physical phenomena, such as pulsations, convection, rotation, accretion, diffusion or magnetism. As a consequence, they offer unique and colorful laboratory for examining and studying these phenomena simultaneously, competitively and in parallel, ultimately enriching the whole gamut of stellar physics.
During this Joint Discussion many new results from high-quality data of CP stars and sophisticated theoretical models will be presented. The techniques used to infer the data, and the ingredients of the models with which the data is compared will be discussed. Future challenges, expected in the context of new ground-based instrumentation, and of space missions recently launched or in preparation, will give the final tone to the Joint Discussion.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Position at the Institute
of Astronomy and Astrophysics (IAA) of the Universite libre de Bruxelles,
Belgium.
We are looking for candidates having a good background in radiative transfer in
stellar atmospheres, preferably with expertise in non-LTE and/or
three-dimensional radiative hydrodynamical modeling.
The successful candidate will participate in a research project entitled "Heavy
elements in the universe: stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis and abundance
determinations". This research group involves a dozen researchers, with a broad
but coherent range of expertise, including derivation of surface abundances in low-
and solar-metallicity cool stars - studied through high-resolution spectroscopy
and dedicated model atmospheres - as well as nuclear astrophysics,
nucleosynthesis, stellar evolution, mixing processes and hydrodynamical modeling.
The team has a priviledged access to the HERMES high-resolution spectrograph
(first light: early 2009).
Within the team, the successful candidate will pursue a research program
aiming at understanding abundance patterns in stars with peculiar abundances.
Depending on the candidate's expertise, his research will focus on one or more
stellar classes among the following: low- and solar-metallicity cool stars
(Miras, S and C stars, carbon-enriched metal-poor stars), as well as Ap stars.
This ambitious research program will require the use and/or development of
efficient tools (non-LTE, dynamical atmospheres, stratified atmospheres).
The position is available from october 2008 on and is for 2 years initially,
with the possibility of extension to a third year.

Dear colleagues,
I am about to close the 'first issue' of the 'Wish list for Atomic and Molecular data'. So far we had the following 'requests' (please, see comments to my first entrance on this subject -- on October 26.2007 -- for the details).
1) A new analysis of Xe II for wavelengths, and better transition probabilities for transitions in the 3500-4800 A wavelength range;
2) Improvement in the wavelengths of iron peak elements, in particular for CrI and CrII;
3) More lines of rare earths elements, for model calculations;
4) Better data in the red and infrared;
5) Improvements in the gf values of Cr II, especially those lines near H-beta. Recent work has improved the values of two lines of multiplet 30 and it would be nice to have better values for the rest of these lines.
6) Oscillator strengths and classifications are lacking for a number of lines found in the Re II spectrum of the star HD 65949 (between 3731 and 4904 AA). Also, of fourteen lines attributed wholly or partially to Os II in the same star, only one has an entry in the VALD database. There are no Te II lines in the VALD database. Also, f-values are lacking for lines of Ru II in the visible.
If you want to add any requests to this list before I write a brief document to send to the president of the Commission on Atomic and Molecular data, please send your requests before June 16, 2008. If possible, use this forum to make your requests. If you cannot do so, you can write to me on mcunha@astro.up.pt.
Best wishes,
Margarida

Dear Colleagues,
It is time to write the triennial report of the working group. The report will appear in the Transactions of the IAU 2006-2009.
In the manuscript we are asked to report over the period September 2006 - June 2008, and project our activities over the period June 2008 - August 2009. Also, our views about the future developments in the field of the WG, and the role WG therein, will be a very important item of the report.
DEAD LINE TO SEND YOUR INFORMATION : 10th of June 2008
HOW TO SEND YOUR INFORMATION : use the 'comments' entrance to respond to my message. Then add a comment with your information. If that fails, you can send an e-mail to me at mcunha@astro.up.pt
INFORMATION REQUESTED
Here is the kind of information that I would like from you (please feel free to send any additional information that you may find relevant for the report)
1) Any meetings, workshops, etc (besides the Vienna CP star meeting last year) related to the field of CP stars, that took or will take place during the period Sept 2006 - Jun 2009;
2) Instruments relevant to the field that became available or will become available during the same period. You can also add their importance to the future development of the field (3 or 4 of lines);
3) Instruments relevant to the field that having become available prior to Sept 2006, have played a major role in the highlight of this research field during the period considered;
4) Major scientific results published in the period from Sep 2006 to date. Please include a brief (two or three lines) description of the result, references, and, when applicable, mention the instruments/techniques that allowed for the new discoveries/results.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Best wishes,
Margarida

Dear all,
During the CP#AP workshop in Vienna, it has been suggested that a 'Wish List' concerning needed atomic and related data, should be collected by the community.
With this entry, I would like to ask all of you with interest in this issue, to share, via this forum, your own 'requests', i.e., to let us know what additional data would you like to see provided by the community working on Atomic data.
At the end of the discussion, if enough material is collected, I shall prepare the 'Wish List' based on your contributions and send it to the president of commission 14.
Thank you in advance for your collaboration.
Margarida
Dear all,
As many of you may remember, during the AP#CP workshop in Vienna, last September, we have discussed the proposal for a Joint Discussion that we hope can be approved by the IAU, to be held during the next IAU General Assembly, in Rio, 2009. As agreed, the proposal was submitted to the IAU, in response to the call issued for letters of intent, with the deadline of September, 15. You can download the proposal at:
http://www.astro.up.pt/~mcunha/documents.
The deadline for submitting the final version of the proposal is December, 1st. If you have additional comments/suggestions to its format and/or content, please let me know.
Suggestions already received, which shall be implemented, concern:
1) A stronger highlight of rotation, in the scientific rational;
2) A stronger highlight of atomic data, in the actual programme.
Thank you in advance for your interest.
Best wishes,
Margarida

Call for registration
During the pre-registration phase we received a lot of positive
feedback, we therefore want to invite you to participate at the
forthcoming workshop. We are also strongly encourage the
attendance and presentation of young researchers.
Fortunately, there are many researchers, spread all over the world,
who are active in this research field. Stellar astrophysics is not
dead. In contrary, new theoretical as well as observational efforts
strongly support our community.
The workshop should serve as a platform to present new results but
also to discuss the construction/reactivation of a powerful
international working group. We therefore encourage the community to
allocate topics of conversation in this regard.
We are looking forward to a constructive and enlightening workshop.

Hi Everyone,
We are looking for a high-resolution, wide wavelength coverage observation of 21 Peg (HD 209459). We use this star extensively as a standard for abundance analyses and to derive astrophysical oscillator strengths. Unfortunately, its spectra in Elodie archive are of too low quality for precise spectroscopic work, and we couldn't find any other observations.
Thanks in advance for any help or hints!

Does anyone have low/medium resolution spectra of alpha Cir in the visible, calibrated in flux?
I have a master student that would like to have such data to use in her work, but she could only find one spectra, calibrated in flux, for alpha Cir in archive data. If you have that kind of data and do not mind her to use it, please let us know.
Cheers!

With the new ApN format, we no longer accepted submission of abstracts. Rather, you must cause your article to appear on the NASA ADS, using 1 of three routes:
1. Your article is accepted and published by a journal or conference proceeding. In that case, it should be automatically added to the ADS. Of course, this requires that you wait until publication.
2. Your article is accepted, and you submit it to the Arxiv astro-ph server. It will then be automatically added to the ADS after a day or two. THIS IS THE PRINCIPAL ROUTE FOR APN SUBSCRIBERS TO SUBMIT ABSTRACTS BEFORE PUBLICATION.
3. Your article is not part of a journal or proceedings that will be included in ADS, and cannot be added to astro-ph. In that case, you can still submit the title, authors and abstract to ADS. WE FORESEE THIS AS THE PRINCIPAL MECHANISM FOR SUBMITTING THESIS ABSTRACTS.
Stay tuned for additional "How To" posts.
I am writing a paper on HD 101065, and I need to establish its effective temperature with the best possible precision. Is there anybody out there who can help me?
